TL;DR: Annika was born in the outskirts of Yekaterinburg, Imperial Russia. She discovers her magic affinity at a young age, which exacerbates her natural odd fascination with the occult and witchcraft. The Russian flu of 1889-1891 took place, and 10-year old Annika gets blamed for the deaths in her town. People stormed her home and wanted to burn her to death, Annika got deathly scared and unknowingly summoned a malevolent entity who possessed her to commit mass slaughter. A traveling group of bluebloods that same night came to her house and exorcised the spirit then put Annika in a magic-induced deep sleep so as not to cause harm to people again. An earthquake in 2010 prematurely wakes her up and a dragon named Zaine discovers her, who takes her in. She follows him to the newly-freed Kingdom of Vaaken in 2021 to seek sanctuary.
